With enthusiasm and great optimism, the Fort Sam Houston ISD Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that we have selected Dr. Gary Bates as our Finalist for the position of Superintendent. The Board was pleased to receive forty-four applications for the position, from which it selected four candidates to interview, two of which ultimately rose to the top. The Board interviewed those two outstanding candidates on Thursday night, and unanimously chose Dr. Bates.
Dr. Bates comes to us as the current Superintendent of Goodrich ISD, having previously served as Junior High Principal in Royal ISD and High School Principal in Hempstead ISD. Dr. Bates earned a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Prairie View A&M in 2007 and a Master’s of Science Degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, where he also earned his Bachelor’s Degree. Dr. Bates holds both Principal and Superintendent certification and has served as a leader in education for over eighteen years.
Dr. Bates considers himself a servant leader and is proud to have led Goodrich ISD schools to achieve a “Met Standard” rating, which is the highest rating awarded by TEA, for the last four years. Dr. Bates is excited about joining us at Fort Sam Houston ISD and for the opportunity to serve our military community and its children, having served himself in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1990-2010.
Dr. Bates cannot be officially hired as Superintendent until after a 21-day waiting period which is required by state law, and the Board anticipates doing so at its regular meeting on July 26, 2018.
